ONLINE MASTERS COURSE

Depending on the vessel “Tonnage” and the seatime the student has acquired will determine what size upgrade the student will get.

  • 25 ton Masters License
  • 50 ton Masters License
  • 100 ton Masters License

To qualify for this course, students must either:

  • Have a Merchant Mariner Endorsement holding an OUPV 6 pack Captains License
  • take the Online Captains Course

Requirements for the 100 ton Masters License?

Masters License-Great Lakes

  • 360 days of service in the deck department, OF WHICH,
    • 90 days of service on Great Lakes

Masters License-Inland

  • 360 days of service on any waters.

Tonnage Calculations Master Great Lakes/Inland

  • 100 GRT– 90 days (25%) of service on vessels of 51 GRT or above, OR, 180 days (50%) of service on vessels of 34 GRT or above
  • 50 GRT– 90 days (25%) of service of vessels of 26 GRT or above OR, 180 days (50%) of service on Vessels 17 GRT or Above
  • 25 GRT–  271 days (75%) or more for endorsement on vessels 5 GRT or less, OR, 90 days (25%) or service on vessels of 1-25 GRT, OR 180 days (50%) of service on vessels 1-16 GRT
  • if mariner does not meet the tonnage calculation for 50 GRT or more He/She is eligible for 25 GRT.

Masters License-Near Coastal

  • 720 days of service in the deck department on Ocean, Near Coastal, or Great Lakes waters, OF WHICH , service on inland waters may substitute for up to 360 days of the total required service

Note: Any service will be credited as follows

  • Service on Great Lakes will be credited day for day.
  • Service on Vessels to which STCW applies (inland or Near Coastal) will be credited day for day.

Tonnage Calculations Master Near Coastal

  • 100 GRT180 days (25%) of service on vessels of 51 GRT or above, OR 360 days (50%)of service on vessels of 34 GRT or above.
  • 50 GRT– 180 days (25%) of service on vessels of 26 GRT or above, OR 360 day (50%) of service on vessels of 17 GRT or above.
  • 25 GRT– 541 days (75%) or more for endorsement on vessels 5 GRT or less, OR, 180 days (25%) or more on vessels 6-25 GRT, OR, 360 days (50%) or more on vessels 1-16 GRT.
  • If mariner does not meet the tonnage calculation for 50 GRT or more, He/She is eligible for 25 GRT.

Additional Requirements

  1. Minimum Age – 19 years old
  2. Physical Exam, Drug Test, Eye Exam, Color Blind Test
  3. Valid CPR/ First Aid card (American Red Cross, Heart Assoc. or USCG Approved course)
  4. US Citizenship
  5. Character reference letters
  6. Completed USCG application package
  7. Certificate of Completion from an approved USCG approved course
  8. Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC Card)
